Comparison
Renting vs Turo in Toronto
Turo is a marketplace; we are a rental company with a lot. That difference explains almost everything else — including the cases where Turo is the better answer.
The structural difference
Turo connects you with a private owner renting out their own car. We own a fleet, insure it, service it and staff it. Neither model is inherently better; they fail in different ways.
Where Turo is genuinely better
- Unusual cars. If you want a convertible for a weekend or something specific for a shoot, a marketplace has variety a fleet cannot justify.
- Price on a quiet weekend. An owner with an idle car will sometimes take less than our cost base allows.
- Neighbourhood pick-up. The car may be parked on your street.
Where a rental company is better
- The car is definitely there. If a host cancels, you are refunded and stranded. If a car of ours goes off the road, we substitute another one from the lot — that is the point of a fleet.
- Insurance is settled before you drive. Ours is a rental agreement with defined coverage and a stated deductible. Peer-to-peer coverage varies by plan and is a common source of dispute.
- Something breaks at 11pm. Roadside assistance is included and we answer.
- Long term. Monthly rental with maintenance included is not a thing a private owner can practically offer.
- Insurance replacement. A marketplace cannot bill your adjuster directly. We can.
- Business use. Corporate accounts, invoicing and consolidated billing.
The deductible question
This is the part people discover late. With us, our Collision Damage Waiver is $14.99 a day and carries a $2,000 deductible, stated plainly before you book. Or you use your own insurance or credit card coverage for less and your own deductible applies. Either way, you know the number in advance. How rental insurance works.
Our honest recommendation
For a fun car on a specific weekend, use the marketplace. For anything where the car being there matters — a claim, a job, a flight, a month without your own vehicle — use a rental company. That is not brand loyalty, it is just what the two models are built to do.
Common questions
Is Turo cheaper than renting a car in Toronto?
Sometimes for a short weekend, particularly off-season. For longer periods, and once insurance and any cleaning or mileage charges are included, the gap usually closes.
What happens if a Turo host cancels?
You are refunded and left to find another car, often at short notice. A rental company with a fleet substitutes a different vehicle instead.
Can I use Turo for an insurance replacement vehicle?
Generally no. Insurers pay rental companies directly under a claim; a peer-to-peer booking is not set up for direct billing.
