The Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The museum is dedicated to the history of the sport of ice hockey. Currently, is operates both as a museum and as a hall of fame for the sport. There are a number of exhibits about the most important people and events that the sport has seen through its long history. As of right now, there are 244 players that have been added to the Hockey Hall of Fame, with additional players being added each year. There are also 98 builders, and 15 on ice officials that have been added to the hall of fame.

The museum contains a number of objects that have played an important role in the sport. You can take a look at the protective equipment that players have worn throughout the history of the sport. Perhaps the most interesting thing about looking at the older equipment is how little protection players actually wore in the early days of the sport. The hall of fame has been criticized for mostly focusing on Canadian players and, for the most part, largely ignoring the contributions of American and international players to the sport.
The Hockey Hall of Fame was originally established by James T. Sutherland, who served as the President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association for more than 20 years in the early to mid-20th century. Originally, the location was named the 'International Hockey Hall of Fame.' The goal of the organization was to honor the successes of some of the greatest players in the history of the sport and also to raise money for a permanent location for the Hockey Hall of Fame. The original inductees consisted of eleven members who were first inducted on April 30th, 1945.
The museum portion of the building has more than 15 exhibit areas that cover nearly 60,000 square feet in total. One section, the MCI Great hall, has portraits and biographical information about some of the most important players in the history of the sport. The main piece contained in the museum is the famed Stanley Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the Stanley Cup finals each year. For part of the year, a replica is placed in the display case while the main cup travels outside of the building.
The NHL Zone is another popular location inside the Hockey Hall of Fame. Dedicated to the National Hockey League, they give information about former and current players that have made huge strides in the sport. They also have a Milestone Exhibit that displays all of the most noteworthy records including Wayne Gretzky's all time points record, which is easily the most popular record in the sport.
In order for a player to be selected to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, they first have to be nominated by an 18 person selection committee. The committee includes a number of Hall of Fame members and media personalities. It is considered an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
If you are a fan of the sport, the Hockey Hall of Fame would be a great place to stop and check out while you are visiting the Toronto area.
